The winter solstice officially arrived at 12:30 a.m. in New York City on December 22, 2011. The winter solstice occurs exactly when the axial tilt of a planet’s polar hemisphere is farthest away from the star that it orbits. Today’s photo from the High Line Park is a reminder that the days now get longer and the nights get shorter.

What a stunning photo. Perfect for the day. Happy Solstice!
