The mystery behind Edward Hopper‘s Nighthawks has tour buses stopping at an empty lot in Greenwich Village telling tourists, ‘here is where the diner was’…typically at Mulry Square on Greenwich Street. In truth, the diner never existed and was a composite of many late-night diners found in NYC during World War II. Curiously this integral piece of New York lore has always resided in Chicago, purchased by the Art Institute of Chicago in 1942 for $3000.
